We are Living in a Material World

As I log onto my computer and pull up the link to write this post, I bypass 3 advertisements, and that is minuscule compared to how many I see in a normal day.

Let’s face it, we are surrounded by materials. Even sitting here at my desk, I am surrounded by materials. My computer, phone, books, pencils, desk, chair, house- the list goes on and on.

We are constantly bombarded with ‘Buy this!’, ‘You need this!’, and ‘Sale on this, this, and this if you buy today!”

It is insane to think about. We almost see as many advertisements as we breathe oxygen. And unless you live in an Earth Ship where everything is self sustainable and you don’t have to go out for anything, this is something you have to deal with everyday.

You know we encourage it, right?

The whole point of advertising is to get costumers to buy the products or service. All the tempting pictures and videos about what you need to get wouldn’t be up there is they didn’t work. Unfortunately they do. And unfortunately they need to work. Otherwise we couldn’t sustain ourselves as humans.

But they don’t need to be so excessive. For, the bible says:

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:19-21 NIV

Now, I know that is a long quote and I realize that if you are not Christian (or religious) then you do not feel like that quote does not apply to you, but let me tell you something that took me a while to figure out.

Material possessions only provide short-term happiness.

And I don’t know about you, but I’d rather had long-term joy in something- in someone- not material.

  1. A message we all need to heed especially during this Season of giving !! Think of all the things we could give that are NOT material things-like time spent with someone we love or someone who is lonely, calls or notes written to someone. What other gifts could be given that cost no money but are more long lasting?
