Puzzle Piece God
I don’t know God.
Well, not completely. Just a little.
And how much is a little? About a puzzle piece size.
My uncle once described everyone’s relationship with God perfectly. We were sitting around the table on Thanksgiving and, of course, the topic of how Christians could have such diverse thinking and still call themselves Christians came up. And even though this was a few years ago, I will never forget what he said.
“My understanding of God is like a puzzle piece. Your understanding of God is like a puzzle piece. Everyone understands God as their own separate puzzle piece. Its when we come together and discuss who God is, that we truly start to get a better picture of how great God is. And everything goes downhill when we start to believe that we have the full puzzle in our own little piece. Our little piece that is only purple or simply a line or maybe even both, but never the whole image of God.”
And that still rings true today. All of us, no matter if you are new to your faith or have been growing for years, only have a puzzle piece like understanding of God. And it’s when we start to believe that our puzzle piece understanding is actually the whole picture, that things go wrong.
So God is loving, true. But God is also just. God is all-powerful, but God is also good. God is awesome, but also awesome. He is God.
And, believe it or not, we are only human and it’s when we start to understand how little we know, that we discover the joy of community and the peace that God isn’t just what we individually define God as.Cause, God help us if God was just the relationship I have with God as or if God was just the relationship you have with God.
Its time we recognize that our knowledge and relationship with God is only a puzzle piece in the big picture.
